DVAR TORAH From the desk of Rabbi Ackerman (Hear a “Torah Minute” by Rabbi Becker here.) “And on the eighth day [a baby boy] shall be circumcised.” (Vayikra 12:3) The Medrash (Tanchuma Tazria 5) recounts a conversation between Rabbi Akiva and the wicked Turnus Rufus: "Whose handiwork is superior, that of HaShem or that of Man?" asks Turnus Rufus. "That of Man," is Rabbi Akiva's response. "Can Man come close to duplicating the beauty of Heaven and Earth?" "Challenge me with something that is within human ability," retorts Rabbi Akiva. Turnus Rufus persists, "Why do you circumcise your children - how can you possibly improve on HaShem's creation of Man?" Rabbi Akiva proceeds to show Turnus Rufus some stalks of wheat and loaves of bread. "The wheat is the product of HaShem, and the bread is the product of Man,” says Rabbi Akiva. “Isn’t the bread a better product?" Undeterred, Turnus Rufus presses on, "If HaShem so desires circumcision, why aren’t babies born circumcised?" "HaShem gave the Mitzvos to the Jewish people only for the purpose of improving, perfecting and purifying (לְצָרֵף) them - as Dovid HaMelech said, ‘אִמְרַת ה' צְרוּפָה/The word of HaShem is pure.’” (Tehillim 18:31/תהלים יח:לא) Rabbi Akiva is teaching us a profound lesson: it is obvious that HaShem makes everything with utmost beauty and perfection. Yet He purposely leaves room for us to change and "improve" upon His creation. Why? This is done out of His great kindness - for the sole purpose of our own improvement: so that we can grow into greater people and draw closer to Him. If HaShem is willing to “limit” His own creation in order to help us grow, how it behooves us to take the opportunity He gives to fulfill His Mitzvos and develop a close, loving relationship with Him! HALACHIC NOTES
- Counting the Omer:
- The Omer is counted each night after nightfall. We recite the blessing while standing, and then count the day, mentioning both the number of days and the number of weeks.
- If one missed a day, one should continue to count the rest of the days of the Omer, but without reciting the blessing.
- If one did not count the Omer at night, but remembered to do so during the daytime, one should count that day without reciting the blessing, but may then resume counting the remaining days of the Omer with the blessing.
- If one is unsure whether one skipped a day, it is often permissible to continue counting with a blessing. A rabbi should be consulted.
