welcome! We are pleased to welcome Rabbi and Mrs. Ackerman as they begin the process of moving full-time to East Northport. The Ackermans are currently residing in the Shul apartment while exploring the possibility of acquiring their own home in the community. Rabbi Ackerman is taking on increased responsibilities at Long Island Torah Network in administration, outreach and community development. He will also be teaching at Mercaz Academy in Plainview. The Shul membership met this week to discuss a proposal to confirm Rabbi Ackerman as the rabbi of YIEN, and a consensus was reached to move forward, with appropriate contingencies. Many who could not attend the meeting shared their ideas in the days leading up to the meeting - and we continue to welcome your feedback in the days ahead. Please reach out anytime to Rabbi Grossman (718.570.4516 / rabbigrossman@longislandtorah.org) or Rabbi Becker (917.554.8337 / rabbibecker@longislandtorah.org) to share your perspectives and discuss additional ways to enhance the future of our Shul. We will continue to share updates in a timely fashion. |
looking aheadAs you know, our last major fundraiser for LITN / YIEN took place over a year ago. In the days ahead, we will launch an even more ambitious campaign to not only cover the year's budgetary needs but to take things to the next level and help the community grow to new heights. We will share more details in the weeks ahead. Together, we can accomplish great things! |

DVAR TORAH
From the Desk of Rabbi Ackerman
(Hear a “Torah Minute” by Rabbi Becker here.)
שופטים יז:יז – ...וְכֶסֶף וְזָהָב לֹא יַרְבֶּה לוֹ מְאֹד
"...And he shall not amass an exceedingly great amount of gold and silver.” (Shoftim 17:17)
As the Torah outlines the laws of appointing a king over the Jewish people, it issues a striking warning: the king must not accumulate excessive wealth beyond what is needed for his basic expenses.
Rabbeinu Bachye explains that when a king begins to stockpile wealth, it can lead to arrogance. His trust may shift from HaShem to his possessions. This concern is echoed later in the Torah’s caution: "So that his heart not be exalted above his brothers" – לְבִלְתִּי רוּם לְבָבוֹ מֵאֶחָיו.
It’s remarkable that even a king—chosen by HaShem Himself, and endowed with exceptional virtues (see verse 15)—is warned so strongly against the spiritual dangers of wealth. He is not permitted to build storehouses or save beyond necessity. The Torah’s concern is not financial—it’s spiritual: that wealth might erode humility and Bitachon.
If this is true of a king, how much more so must we, in our own lives, be vigilant not to let material comfort weaken our reliance on HaShem.
As we enter the month of Elul and prepare for Rosh HaShanah, may we merit to deepen our relationship with HaShem, strengthen our Bitachon, and safeguard that connection with sincerity and effort. Through this, we will be primed for an uplifting and inspiring Rosh HaShanah—and may we all be inscribed and sealed in the Book of Life.
